What is Google Ads and why does the same click cost different amounts?
Google Ads is Google’s advertising platform, serving adverts across search, display, YouTube, and shopping. Search advertising operates as a live auction, but position is not determined by bid alone. Ad Rank combines your bid with Quality Score, which measures expected click-through rate, advert relevance, and landing page experience. Two advertisers bidding identically on the same keyword can occupy different positions and pay different amounts. The advertiser whose advert users find genuinely relevant pays less, which is a rare instance of platform incentives aligning with user interest.
What is Quality Score and why does it matter?
A one-to-ten rating of advert and landing page relevance. Higher scores reduce cost per click and improve position at the same bid, so a poor score is a tax paid continuously and invisibly.
What is the difference between broad match and exact match?
Exact match triggers on the specific term and close variants. Broad match triggers on anything Google judges related, which has widened considerably and now frequently includes terms bearing little resemblance to the original.
Should I bid on my own brand name?
Usually yes, if competitors bid on it. The click is cheap because Quality Score is high, and ceding the position means a competitor’s advert appears above your organic result when somebody searches specifically for you.
